Learning from Sumiko
Sumiko Iwamuro, known as DJ Sumirock to Japanese clubgoers, is a renowned Japanese DJ and music producer who began her music career later in life.
After 50 years of working in her family-owned restaurant, Sumiko attended the IDPS DJ school in Tokyo to enable her pivot into the music scene. During her time there, she developed her own unique style of blend electronic and traditional genres, which can be heard in nightclubs around the world and in her feature in Netflix’s “Midnight Asia.”
The takeaway: Continuous learning, grit, and talent all play a role in making your pivot successful, and of course, it’s never too late to practice your passion.
